New Delhi: If the Supreme Court has ordered probe into the disproportionate assets of BSP supremo Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav, why not an inquiry into the CPM’s source of income to pay Rs 3,200 per month salary to each of its 7,000-odd full-time workers across the country, asks a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that is sure to invite contempt of the Left parties. Jaideep Mukherji, who filed the PIL on Wednesday in his capacity as secretary of All India Legal Aid Forum, Kolkata, said that he was not in favour of mentioning this petition for an early hearing before the apex court because of the uncertain political situation.
“I will seek an early hearing of the PIL only after the trust vote on July 22 is over. Mentioning it now would make the petition appear politically motivated,” he told The Times Of India. He said that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPM, which had been the ruling party in West Bengal for the last 30 years and has held power for considerable periods of time in the states of Kerala and Tripura, claimed to have assets worth Rs 200 crore and paid Rs 2 crore as salary every month to its fulltime workers. Making CPM general secretary Prakash Karat and 10 other leaders including MPs and central committee members respondents to the Public Interest Litigation petition, Mukherji wanted a probe to ascertain the party’s source of income. He also claimed that most of the party’s members of parliament had amassed assets running into lakhs of rupees even though their affidavits filed along with nomination papers stated that they did not have any source of income. |
