It has been only three months in the year 2008 and India already has number of polio cases this year. Probably we have distinction of having the world's highest number of polio cases till now this year. Nigeria, Pakistan and Afgahinstan are other three countries which have polio cases in world. But somehow Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are one of the biggest reserviours of polio virus, making India to fail to achieve the target it had set itself - to eradicate polio from the country. Union health Minister under leadership of Dr Anumbami Ramdoss recently had admitted the failure and had called for review of the National Polio Control Programme which is governed by advise of International agencies like UNICEF and WHO.
This seems that we have failed and our strategy has not worked and their is need to review and then plan. But one question which also needs evaluation is that why have we failed ?As per NDTV scientific experts have made a strong case for introducing injectable vaccination apart from the oral one to help curb the spread of the deadly disease. The use of IPV (Inactivated Oral Polio Vaccine) in the injectable form carries lesser risks and is more effective than the routine Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV), experts say, while stressing that the government needs to think of other possible measures and options available to stem the problem. Other than the risk of acquiring VAPP, Oral polio vaccine loses its effectiveness in conditions of poor sanitation and thus is the primary reason why polio still persists in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Am not sure what is right or wrong, will this help but one thing is important that many would like to know the answer of question that whether India will eradicate polio or not or will it go malaria way ? |
