Chinese spokes in N-deal? -------------------------------
What are the Chinese up to? Dr Manmohan Singh and his close aides are a bit disappointed by the Chinese regime's response to the smooth passage of the n-deal. Most national governments had heads of Nuclear Suppliers Group countries congratulating the good doctor for winning the crucial vote in parliament. But the Chinese have kept mum. In the Congress, a plausible explanation is doing rounds that while western nations are pleased to note that the UPA has severed its ties with the communists, the prominent communist nation is yet to come to terms with it.
Manmohan's emissary for China, Prithviraj Chavan had to wait for many days before getting an appointment with Chinese authorities to put across Indian point of view for NSG support. Chavan, currently in Beijing, is however confident of his success. He is counting on his previous trip to China with Sonia and Rahul Gandhi where the otherwise aloof Chinese had gone an extra mile to welcome mother and son. The Chinese establishment had viewed young Gandhi as 'princeling' who is tipped to take up future leadership position in India. The spotlight on Rahul was so much that some leading communist leaders had succeeded in convincing Rahul and in turn Sonia that instead of viewing itself as an Asian counterweight to China, India should cooperate rather than compete with China. ----------------------------------
The growing up of Politician Manmohan --------------------------------------------------
Dr. Manmohan Singh has proved himself as a worthy disciple of modern day 'Chanakya,' P.V. Narasimha Rao. Manmohan, who was initiated into politics by Rao, has always been a proud 'chela' of sorts but few in the Congress believed him as a master of managing contradictions and perfecting the art of 'real politick.' July 22 has therefore been a watershed in the life of Indian National Congress. Congressmen have begun to view Manmohan with lot more care, attention and admiration.
The reason is not very difficult to fetch. Since last August, 'politician' Manmohan worked hard to get everything in place for the n-deal. In terms of numbers, each member of parliament had a wish-list that UPA managers were expected to fulfill. Rebel DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran had initially announced that he will stay away from the crucial trust vote. Manmohan sought Union Commerce Minister Kamal Nath's services. Nath called Maran asking him to reconsider his decision. Maran reluctantly agreed provided Congress president Sonia Gandhi asked him to do so. A message to Sonia was sent and a call to Chennai was done. Maran was in Lok Sabha to side with Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Throughout the crisis period, Manmohan remained glued to telephone line. Each day, he called up at least half a dozen MPs who in the last four years or before had not heard from him. The conversation was usually brief but sounded like between members of mutual admiration society. ------------------------
Chavan redeems himself -----------------------------
AICC general secretary and minister of state in the prime minister's office (PMO) Prithviraj Chavan is a happy man these days. As party functionary Chavan had a poor success ratio when he lost the Tripura and Meghalaya assembly polls, followed by the Karnataka debacle. Whispers began in the Congress that 'good boy' Chavan was not good enough for political work. But during the n-deal row, the Maratha from Karad, Maharashtra exhibited his acumen and managed to get 'numbers' from 'nowhere.' For a week or so, he managed to sleep between four am to 6 am. But fruit of success has kept him intact. --------------------
Uma-Amar dosti ---------------------
My enemy's enemy is my friend.
It seems to be Uma Bharti's motto. The Sadhvi too played a role in bailing out Manmohan regime. The incredible possibility happened when her protégé Chandrabhan Singh, BJP MP from Damoh-Panna voted for the ruling coalition. His house was vandalized by BJP workers in Jabalpur and Delhi. Uma rushed to Amar Singh's house seeking protection for Chandrabhan. In turn, Amar got in touch with top UPA functionaries. Chandrabhan is safe and now plans to join Uma's Bhartiya Janshakti after he got expelled from the BJP ---------------------
Devil turning Gandhian! -----------------------------
Dara Singh, currently facing life sentence for killing Australian missionary Graham Stains and his two sons, is adopting 'Gandhian practice' of hunger strike. In jail, Dara wants a television with cable or DTH to keep himself abreast of news and views. When his letter to the inspector general of police (prison) did not yield the desired result, Dara went on a hunger strike and now his plea for TV is being considered. --------------------
Election time Santa ------------------------
Former union minister Akhilesh Das has a Santa Claus image in Lucknow. Das who recently joined the Bahujan Samaj Party has made it a habit of showering gifts much before Lok Sabha polls are announced. The traders have received fans for their shops. The Muslim community is getting sweets on their festivals and the city is getting plastered with Das' banners and posters. -------------
Taslima on the way back? --------------------------------
Controversial author Taslima Nasreen may soon be back in India. Nasreen, who had to leave the country under duress, is pleased to note that her tormentors, the Left parties are out of the UPA regime. She is hoping that having snapped ties with the Left, the UPA's ministry of external affairs will give her a chance to be back in Calcutta. If sources close to Taslima are to be believed, she is confident of coming to India in August itself. -----------------
Beware Brother! ---------------------
Was it deliberate or it happened in the spur of the moment? A day after the trust vote, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati was heard addressing CPM's general secretary Prakash Karat as ' Bhai Karat'. This was sweet music for all those present. Rakshabandhan festival is next month and all eyes are now on Maya if she will tie knot at brother Karat's wrist. Maya has a track record of using Rakshabandhan to strengthen her political alliances. Uttar Pradesh BJP leader Lalji Tandon had twice been blessed but when BSP-BJP alliance collapsed, sister Maya twisted Tandon's first name a bit to sound like a greedy man. ---------------
Omar should thank Owaisi -------------------------------
While every one is busy showering lavish praise on Omar Abdullah's speech in the Lok Sabha, the real credit should go to Majlis Ittihad-e-Muslamein (MIM) member Asaduddin Owaisi. It was young Owaisi's assertiveness that fructified in Omar's hard-hitting, "I am a proud Indian and a proud Muslim…' speech.
It so happened that hours before the crucial trust vote, the presence of cash in the Lok Sabha prompted the speaker to curtail all speeches but Owaisi told Congress floor managers that he would not vote for the government motion if he does not get a chance to speak. The smaller parties got a chance and Omar had his say. Omar now plans to bring out a book on how the positive messages he has received following the speech and is currently displaying them proudly in his blog.
