Patil's literary quest
Shivraj Patil is a busy man these days. The country's home minister is engaged in writing poetry and his volume in Marathi will soon be out. This is not all. Patil seems to be bit enamored by the success of "My country, My Life." In the era of literary conquests, Patil does not want to be left behind. Otherwise why should his office be sending volumes of "Reminiscences and Reflections, "Emerging Vision of India," "Fragrance of inner self" and "Dialogues" --- all authored by Shivraj Vishwanath Patil to top senior leaders of the UPA and opposition? ------------------------------------------------
Ambitious Secular Face in North Block!
With master busy writing, North Bloc is witnessing free for all of sorts. Shivraj Patil's juniors Sri Prakash Jaiswal and Shakeel Ahmad are vying to give maximum bytes by day or week. New entrant Ahmad has an edge as he doubles up as AICC spokesperson too. Ahmad is also projecting himself as a "Muslim face" of the UPA claiming that he has been bought in the home ministry to "balance" the "right wing" image of his senior Patil. The "right wing" slight is based on comrade A.B. Bardhan's claim during the presidential elections when the left had vetoed Patil's candidature on grounds of lacking in "secular credentials."
Ahmad's desires do not stop at bigger role in home ministry. He has been telling every visitor that his residence at 7, Ashoka Road, New Delhi was once occupied by Bihar chief minister Bhagwat Jha Azad. The remark is made in such a tone as if he will be following in the footsteps of Bhagwat Jha. But given the state of the Congress in Bihar, it may take ages…..

Rahul scare for Chauhan too
Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan is doing a "Mayawati" to counter Rahul Gandhi's forays into tribal strongholds in election-bound Madhya Pradesh.
Chauhan has shot off a letter to the Prime Minister Dr.
Manmohan Singh seeking Rs.25,000 crore package for drought-hit Bundelkhand region of the state where Rahul recently paid a visit.
Rahul was in Panna, Chattarpur and Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh between April 16-18. During his visit to village Tapriyan, the Amethi MP had offered to help out a tribal girl Kamla who was getting married on April 22. Her marriage day passed without Rahul or the Congress fulfilling the promise. Chauhan quickly stepped in to send Rs.20,000 in cash to her. A rather patronizing remark followed, "Rahul Gandhi is new to politics. He must learn how to keep promises."
Chauhan's move to take on Rahul is seen as taking a leaf from his Uttar Pradesh counterpart. BSP supremo Mayawati had paid a visit to some dalit houses where Rahul Gandhi had gone. When Rahul went to Bundelkhand region falling under Uttar Pradesh, she quickly sought Rs.80,000 crore package. Since then, her party has been accusing Rahul and Congress of consciously neglecting Bundelkhand and even threatened to withdraw support from the UPA.

Naidu keeping a close eye
Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu is living by his information technology image. Naidu, currently on board "Chaitanya rath" to shore up Telugu Desam Party's chances in next round assembly polls, holds twice a day "teleconference" with TDP leader in parliament Yerran Naidu. The bulky Yerran could be seen speaking in loud voice to Chandrababu briefing him about proceedings in both houses of parliament. Thus, Chandrababu may be in any part of India, his eyes and ears are glued to corridors of powers in Delhi.

Tail-piece Heard in parliament: If BJP had nominated Rekha Mahajan, wife of Pramod Mahajan to Rajya Sabha, old Nirma washing powder jingle would have come true …"Rekha, Jaya, Sushma aur Hema, sab ki pasand nirma…." |
