Bra and Human Rights!
Is it a denial of human rights? CPM member Varkala Radhakrishnan told Lok Sabha that denial of breast milk amounts to violation of human rights. Participating in a discussion on "maternity benefits (amendment) bill," 2008, the elderly leader from Chirayinkil (kerala) said fashionable mothers who do not breastfeed children should be pulled up for human rights violation. The MP said breast milk is not only wholesome food but a child's right too. The MP also objected to young mothers using bra after delivery saying such a measure amounts to a "disservice" to the baby.

Auspicious Entry
The Fulbright scholar is a great believer in astrology. So when S.M. Krishna resigned as governor Maharashtra to rejoin state politics in Karnataka, he spent considerable time looking for an auspicious time to enter the home state. The battery of soothsayers viewed direct flight to Bengalaru as ill-fated, while train journey too failed to find favour with astrologers. The road entry was deemed most suitable and an entry point through Belgaum was thought to be most favourable. Krishna entered through Belgaum but rather discreetly. The former Governor of Maharashtra was hesitant to take a stand of raging agitation over Belgaum's integration with Maharashtra when Kannadigas insist it to be their own.

Undaunted Prithviraj
The series of defeats in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura has not dampened AICC general secretary Prithviraj Chauhan's spirit. Chavan who doubles up as minister in the PMO celebrated his birthday in grand style. First he distributed the most expensive sweets at his parliament house office and then in the evening, there was elaborate puja, festivities and dinner at his 11, Race Course Road residence.
In Congress party, Chavan's detractors point out that two more states under him --- Karnataka and Jammu and Kashmir – will go to polls later this year.

Ambika's Gambit
Union Culture & Tourism minister Ambika Soni has a burning desire to get back to her previous "number two" status in the Congress party. Ambika was in Sonia's A-list for many years but lost out months after 2004 General election victory when other AICC office-bearers emerged more powerful. Her current status as a minister is a pale shadow of her illustrious past.
Ambika recently got a chance to get back in Madame's "good books" in Rajya Sabha when she got an opportunity to get even with Jaya Bachchan. The Samajawadi party MP rubbed Ambika the wrong way alleging that Left-led Kerala was being given step motherly treatment. The tourism minister retorted that her ministry was not in a habit of according secondary status to any state. Challenging Jaya to substantiate her charges, Ambika said she was prepared to tender apology if Achuthanandan government endorses the Samajawadi party MP's allegation.
Now sources close to Ambika are hoping that the news of her "clash" with Jaya reaches 10, Janpath and has the desired impact.

"Hanuman" Naidu
The appointment of Venkaiah Naidu as BJP's points man for election-bound Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh has generated lot of interest in the principal opposition party. Naidu was considered an out and out L.K. Advani man but these days, he has become party chief Rajnath Singh's closest adviser and associate. Naidu supporters equate his sense of loyalty to the party president with Lord Hanuman's devotion to his master. |
