Oh Rahul Baba---Mani's teary eyes
Mani Shankar Aiyar is the latest addition in marketing "brand Rahul." Aiyar invited the young Gandhi MP to interact with Panchayat representatives handpicked from various states. The Amethi MP was happy to be among the "real people." Rahul said he has a liking for "hands-on-persons" recalling how uneducated farmers in his constituency were able to pick holes in a World Bank project. Sitting at a distance, Mani's eyes went moist recalling how a young Rajiv too had a similar zeal and sense of urgency to take India into the 21st century.

Sonia-Maneka Union not to be
It was a great re-union that was not. Private TV channels went on an over-kill claiming that Maneka Gandhi congratulated her sister in law, Sonia on completing ten years as the Congress president. A closer scrutiny showed that it was a fit case of being economical with truth. There was no call or personal interaction between two famous and estranged daughters-in-law of Indira Gandhi. It just happened that when Maneka was stepping out of parliament, byte-hungry TV scribes sought her comment on Sonia's "achievement." Taken aback, Maneka said rather dryly that she wishes "her (Sonia) well." The statement led to the great Indian family re-union that was not.

Tytler tantrums!
Facing 1984 riot heat, former Union Minister Jagdish Tytler recently called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi complaining that farmers were saying they would not avail of the loan waiver, as it was too little. Sonia paused then told Tytler that she did not know that the MP from cent percent urban Sadar constituency had many farmers who were complaining or cribbing. Moreover she told him to remember that the wavier does not come into affect till the budget is passed. Maybe Tytler should have waited before meeting Sonia?

Penny Pinching Princess
The princess of Gwalior is feeling elated these days. BJP MP Yashodhara Raja Scindia is busy circulating a copy of her speech made in the Lok Sabha to everyone that she knows. It has Yasho speaking on the rail budget where she wondered why railways could not raise money though an IPO as China had done. Yasho does not miss to add that when she made the remark and turned to Comrades, she received handsome thumping and laughter from the Congress benches. Last heard Delhi's socialites were pressing her to throw a party, but the Gwalior princess was trying to wriggle out of it on grounds of being unnecessarily extravagant. The Scindias are known to tightly hold their purses. |
