Deoband's fundamental face
Just as media was gloating over Deoband's path-breaking and politically correct "fatwa" against suicide bombing, terrorism and militancy, the country's oldest Islamic seminary has come up with a series of other "fatwas." One fatwa has termed sex education as both undesirable and prohibited. The other fatwa says cinemas are centres of sin, haram as shariah. In effect, it said Khans who walked away with most of the latest filmfare awards are indulging in sinful, irreligious activities.
Bollywood has reacted angrily with Shabana Azmi leading the corps claiming that "obscure" persons from Deoband have little standing within the Muslim community. Imtiaz Ali who recently made "Jab we Met" laughed at the fatwa saying this was the only reaction he could give to Deobandi fatwa. Wish media was doing the same, lamented Naseeruddin Shah.

Nehru in attire
The Nehruvian socialism may be dead and gone but jawahar jacket is in fashion. Jawahar jacket is the most popular and chic thing in Delhi durbar these days. Great grandson Rahul Gandhi is leading the pack with his group of ten consisting of likes of Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jitin Prasad, Milind Deora, Sachin Pilot following it. When this elite gang called on the Prime Minister to discuss pros and cons of national rural employment guarantee scheme, the good doctor could not help notice that almost all ten had white kurta pajama and black Jawahar jacket………... Long live Nehru and Nehruvian taste but is this the only thing Nehruvian left in the present-day Congress?

BJP's brand of sycophancy
Flattery and sycophancy is not the sole domain of the Congress.
BJP president Rajnath Singh can give serious competition to any Congressman professing loyalty and affection to "Madame" at 10, Janpath. BJP wallahs vied with each other in complimenting L.K. Advani's wife Kamla at a recent party meet in Delhi's Ramlila ground. Most speakers confined themselves as addressing Mrs. Advani as "bhabhi" (sister in law) but when Rajnath Singh's turn came to speak, the BJP chief called her "ma" (mother). The prime minister in waiting now has a wife who is the unanimously acceptable matriarch in the parivar.

Taking "Toll" on VIPs
With more and more foreign and private companies building roads and bridges, the political class is getting agitated. As per norm of public-private-partnership (PPP) scheme, these companies are expected to earn money through toll tax collection. Here they clash with elected representatives. The MPs and MLAs cutting across party lines hate to shell out Rs 20 or ten pointing that if they were entitled for free air, train and bus travel, they should not be paying toll tax. Moreover, it hurts their sense of importance and VIP status too. With general elections round the corner and nine assembly polls due in 2008, the MLAs and MPs from various election bound states want state governments to waive off toll-tax rule. But most state governments have problem in granting a waiver as MoUs signed with private players do not have a clause for VIP exemption. |
