Now he is "Santosh"
Heavy Industries Minister Santosh Mohan Deb is now breathing easily. Deb was both angry and hurt because a junior minister was keeping him out of poll-bound Tripura. Deb who hails from Tripura fancies himself as a possible Chief Minister of Tripura should voters opt for the Congress in the state. But AICC general secretary in charge of Tripura, Prithviraj Chavan had a rather dim view of him. The minister in PMO has reportedly declined to take Deb's "inputs" while formulating Congress strategy in Tripura. If AICC grapevine was to be believed, Chavan has not been taking Deb's telephone calls too and the matter has reached party chief Sonia Gandhi. When Deb got busy badmouthing Chavan describing him as an "up-start," he got a meeting invite. Since then, the bad blood between two ministers has receded.

Replacing guns with laptops
These are changing times in Bihar. Until couple of years ago, the MLAs-MLCs cutting across party lines used to vie to get gun license for themselves and party faithful. Laloo and Rabri seldom disappointed them. Now Nitish Kumar has decided to arm them with laptops. The Chief Minister has ordered 317 laptops for 243 MLAs and 74 MLCs sanctioning Rs. 3 crores. Special computer training sessions have been planned for the literate, semi literate and those who studied at the "university of life." Would it lead to different culture in Bihar?

Rahul's pet love
Rahul Gandhi's obsession with his blackberry is becoming some sort of a legend in the Congress circles. The young AICC general secretary spends considerable time on his mobile though it is not clear if he is always sending sms or playing some sort of game. A closer look at his blackberry shows Gandhi a devout dog lover. Yes the screen has a picture of smooth coat Jack Russell, presumably his favourite pet.
Jack Russell is a happy, bold, energetic dog; they are extremely loyal, intelligent, and assertive. Their greatest attribute is their working ability, closely followed by their excellent qualities as a companion.

Maneka following Sonia?
Maneka Gandhi may not like to admit it but her actions seem to be showing sneaking admiration for Sonia Gandhi. Indications are that Maneka will vacate her Pilibhit Lok Sabha seat for son Feroze Varun in the ensuing general elections. For Congress wallahs it is straight lift from Sonia's gesture to vacate Amethi for son Rahul and move over to Rai Bareli where she won with equal ease. It remains to be seen where Maneka will contest from if Feroze Varun takes over at Pilibhit. The young Gandhian is spending five days a week in Pilibhit these days. Maneka's supporters say her gesture should not be seen in the context of taking a leaf from Sonia book, rather it is a fit case how "Gandhis" think alike. Take your pick.

Jairam's mysteries
Jairam Ramesh is back in the Congress future challenges group though with a reduced clout. A large section of Congressmen ranging from Veerappa Moily, Digvijay Singh, and Ambika Soni to more weighty Kamal Nath and P. Chidambaram are perplexed by Jairam surpassing cat's nine-lives theory. Days have passed by there is not a plausible explanation to Jairam's "exit and re-entry." There are several theories, which are doing rounds. Jairam baiters said it has to do with mother and son's magnanimous nature to forgive. Another school of thought points at Jairam's pen, his drafting skills and ability to put thoughts in words. Yet another group attributes to powerful "lobby." As if enjoying the discomfort, each day Jairam leaves from Udyog Bhawan to C-1/9 Lodhi Gardens briskly walking, smiling with his sarkari car, security in tow. |
