Thakurs' one-upmanship
The Election Commission's notice to Sonia Gandhi and Digvijay Singh lifted the spirit of Congressmen in Madhya Pradesh. There was a consensus that Diggy raja has "arrived" on national scene. Being in league with "supreme leader" even in violating model code of conduct is seen as a major achievement in Congress circles. Arjun Singh detractors within the party went a step further pointing that the old Thakur's "humiliation" was complete. Arjun, they pointed out is beaten by Digvijay in two crucial spheres. Firstly, Diggy had broken Arjun domain in taking on Sangh parivar and more importantly, replacing former Raja of Churhat in Sonia Gandhi's prized inner circle. Both Arjun and Digvijay hail from thakur-rajput community where valor and boasting is ranked highest. The union human resource minister needs to do something more spectacular to break the spreading word-of-mouth myth.

Advani's new avatar---Oral or Written!
The BJP Parliamentary Board witnessed a debate of sorts before announcing L.K. Advani's name as "Prime Minister-in-waiting." It had little to do with the leadership issue. The argument between the BJP leaders was whether a written statement should be issued or an oral pronouncement be made about Advani's new avatar. The old guard was in favour of a written formulation but party president Rajnath Singh won the day in insisting that he would walk before the invited media to do the honours. Rajnath then turned to Murli Manohar Joshi requesting him to accompany him. Joshi stood stoically while Rajnath made the announcement.
Advani camp was reportedly keen for a written statement.
This course would have given a little background and placed on record Advani's leadership ability proven track record etc. It perhaps explains why the move was shelved.

Hectic Lobbying
Hectic lobbying is on to bag the coveted post of the Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The elevation of Banking Secretary Vinod Rai as CAG has enhanced aspirant Subba Rao's prospects. Rao is currently serving as Union Finance Secretary. But informed sources said present incumbent Y.V.Reddy's deputy Dr. Rakesh Mohan could be a surprise choice. Watch this space.
Another key post going to be vacant is SEBI chairman M. Damodaran's, who will be retiring in February next year. Many powerful IAS officers are vying for the prized assignment.

Land Deals!
Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar is unhappy with Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy over delay in land allotment for NCP party office in Delhi's Rouse Avenue. The RJD and the Congress have already got huge tracts to build new party offices.
A little birdie in Urban Development explains why Pawar may have to wait for a while, even though the file clearing land for NCP has been signed. Pawar's party is reportedly entangled with Uttar Pradesh politics. The ministry is in no hurry to grant land to Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party. Even the Bahujan Samaj party is under watch with an eye on Congress' future plans for country's most populous state. Pawar has been told that if NCP gets land, Amar Singh and other Samajwadis would demand land for SP too. The politician in Pawar is forced to stomach it. |
