Dhawan's Cook-ie crumbles

Another "loyalist" shuffling in discomfort is R.K. Dhawan. The AICC general secretary in charge of Himachal Pradesh awarded ticket to a person whose only claim to fame was that his father had worked in 10, Janpath kitchen. AICC chief Sonia Gandhi is livid that the person was given the party ticket solely on this decisive factor when she had merely written on his application "please see." The central election committee that selected the candidate was reportedly told by Dhawan to read lot more in "please see" than what was required. The cook's son's future is now being linked with Dhawan's. Watch the space.

Chini-Congress hai hai!

When a Chinese communist party delegation arrived at the "committee" room at 24, Akbar Road, they were greeted by flies and dust.
The Congress delegation consisting of AICC general secretaries Margaret Alva and Prithviraj Chavan was casual and dismissive. Speaking through interpreters, the "party-to-party" level interaction rounded up rather quickly. Even Indian tea was not served. Minutes after the delegation left the Congress party headquarters, someone whispered that one of the delegates had received Sonia Gandhi when the AICC chief had visited China. Many faces fell. The source of information was chided for being late with "crucial inputs."

Sachin Pilot's Home tuitions

Young MP Sachin Pilot was a last minute addition from the Congress party to the nuclear debate in Lok Sabha. He was the only speaker from the Congress who spoke in Hindi with Jyotiraditya Scindia, Pranab Mukherjee and Nikhil Kumar sticking to English. Before the debate, Sachin practiced with his mother Rama and stumbled over Hindi translations of words like IAEA and nuclear safeguards. Rama became emotional recalling how she had honed Squadran leader Rajeshwar Prasad's oratorical skills in 1980s when Rajesh Pilot had entered politics leaving a career in Indian Air Force. Rama told Sachin to avoid the technicalities and stick to the sense of the debate instead. The advice worked very well as Sachin was one of the best speakers and received a pat from Pranab Mukherjee.

Kamal Nath on Cloud Nine

Kamal Nath's moment of pride arrived when he received a handsome compliment from the prime minister. Releasing Nath's book "India's Century: The Age of Entrepreneurship in the World's Biggest Democracy," the good doctor clubbed commerce and industry minister with P. Chidambaram, Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Sharad Pawar as one of the "achievers" of the UPA government. Nath triumphantly looked around for Chidambaram but the finance minister who does not think much of Nath, was absent at the book release function. Published by McGraw-Hill of New York, Nath's book gives a first hand view of his ideas and how he seeks to take India Inc on to the global platform while laying a roadmap for Indian entrepreneurs to benefit from emerging trade opportunities.

Hours after receiving Dr. Manmohan Singh's compliment, Nath was seen taking a dig at Chinese counterfeiters at the 8th India-EU Business Summit. He told a business delegation from the European Union, "The delegation from the EU is coming from China, I do hope that they have  filled their bags with counterfeit products as they will not find that in India." The EU delegates were in for more when Nath spoke about the problems between EU and India said, "In one of our meetings, the issue of animal welfare was raised, I don't know what that has to with trade and investment. We will move forward, if the EU does not bring the issue of animal welfare." Clearly the minister has taken the title of his book too seriously.

The New Film Moghuls

Following L.N. Mittal and Swaraj Paul's footsteps, Indian corporate giants are getting into films. Anand Mahindra of Mahindra & Mahindra is so serious that he has done a course in film-making from the United States. Realtor K.P. Singh too is serious about producing some movies. Kishor Biyani's Future Group is also drawing huge plans. Insiders said a lot will depend upon success of Anil Ambani's "big Motion Pictures" and Studio 18.
