Of Advani and Loyalties
L.K. Advani is back with bang. At a recent bhajan sandhya by Anup Jalota to mark wife Kamla's 75th birthday, the crowd was impressive. The presence of K. S.Sudershan and Mohan Bhagwat showed that Advani was acceptable to the RSS. The best part of the evening was when Jalota moved from bhajans to ghazals and sang, "tumne itni bewafai ki ke koi aur bewafa na laga"(you have been so disloyal, that I felt I don't need any other disloyal person) was extremely telling. Several BJP leaders kept asking Jalota to repeat these lines. Heads turned from Advani to various others who had deserted Advani during Jinnah controversy. A point was made. Little wonder than that Advani walked up to Jalota after his performance to say that the singer had made the evening a memorable one.

Uma in Hiding
For Uma Bharati, the homecoming has turned out to be a nightmare. It is an endless wait for the fiery Sadhvi to return to the BJP. Her well-wishers Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and Gurumurthy have advised Uma to avoid speaking to the media till they put the "house" in order. Uma has gone into hiding. Her advisers say Uma has taken a vow not to speak till January 2. What could be the significance of Jan. 2 has not been revealed.

Lalu's smart Gimmicks
Lalu Prasad Yadav is never short of theatrics. Just the other day he was holding a press conference with a French business school Dean Frank Brown. Brown presented the union railway minister his book titled "The Global Business Investors." Laloo quickly removed the wrapper and displayed the book before the television cameras and media as if he was doing a book release. The dean was up on his feet saying the book is already out and it is not a release function.
But Lalu had done his deed.

Brother-in-law bait
Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan's camp has adopted a rather ingenious method to tame the opposition Congress seeking Chief Minister's resignation over corruption charges. The chief minister's brother-in-law Sanjay has walked up to the Congress seeking admission in the party. Sanjay, a business contractor cum social worker, met AICC general secretary in charge of state V. Narayanaswamy and leader of the opposition in the State assembly Jamuna Devi promising to give "inside info" against several state ministers. The Congress almost fell in the trap when Digvijay Singh altered the party. Singh, a former chief minister told his Congress colleagues that Sanjay's entry could deprive them from attacking chief minister's wife Sadhna who is in the thick of a controversy over purchase of dumpers (heavy vehicles). "How would you distinguish between misdeeds of the brother and sister when Sanjay is in," Digvijay reportedly asked. The poser served its purpose and now the Congress is busy distancing itself from Sanjay's overtures.

Congress Headless in UP
All dressed up and nowhere to go. In principle the Congress high command is never short of according primacy to Uttar Pradesh but the news from ground is different. In spite of Rahul Gandhi's presence and appointment of Digvijay Singh as AICC general secretary in charge of the state, the party has not been able to name its leader in Uttar Pradesh assembly four months after the formation of the government. What is more intriguing is that even in UP Legislative Council, the party is going headless. |
