Sad plight of Malaysian Indians
Written by
Kamlendra Kanwar
The Malaysian Government's harsh response to a street demonstration by about 10,000 ethnic Indians in Kuala Lumpur, protesting racial discrimination has brought the long-simmering issue of discontent among Malaysian Indians to centrestage.

The tragedy of the ethnic Indians has been that the Malaysian Indian Congress that supposedly represents them in the ruling coalition has been a poor votary of their cause.

It's leader, Samy Velu, who has been minister for over 29 years has never, in any meaningful way espoused the cause of the community and fought against the economic deprivation that it has been subjected to. He has instead been obsessed with feathering his own nest.

Predictably, he has sided with the government on the demonstration against racial discrimination and has warned leaders of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) that is spearheading the demonstration.
Deep within, he is aware that the Hindu rights group could pose a challenge to his unbridled supremacy in the national elections that are expected in a few months.

The sheer size of the protest represents a political challenge for the MIC. Ethnic Indians from around the country swarmed into Kuala Lumpur for the rally, despite a virtual lock-down of the capital over the previous three days and warnings from police and the government that people should not take part.
There is substance in the charge of Malaysian Indians that a government affirmative-action policy in favour of majority ethnic Malays over the last few years has marginalized them. Malays make up about 60 per cent of the population and, according to official data, remain the poorest group but Opposition groups say the most severe cases of poverty exist among Indians.

Quite unfairly, while Malays are treated as Bumiputras (sons of the soil) and are recipients of various reservations and concessions in education and jobs, the ethnic Indians and Chinese are identified by their race even though they may have been there for generations, and are by implication not treated as sons of the soil.

The ethnic Chinese, who are about 30 per cent against the 7-8 per cent of ethnic Indians, are largely into business. They are left to themselves and past attempts to strike at their economic base have been strongly and successfully resisted. They have no interest in political power and in Government jobs so long as their business interests are not encroached upon.

The Indians, on the other hand, are the ones who feel the heat the most with the Malaysian Government's pro-Malay policies. They are largely into Government jobs and work in the plantations where they first came as migrant labourers over a century ago. They have a very poor presence in business, accounting for a bare 1.

5 per cent of the country's wealth.
Hindraf leader P Uthaya Kumar hit the nail on the head when he said in justification of the demonstration: "They (ethnic Indians) are frustrated and have no job opportunities in the government or the private sector. They are not given business licences or places in university." Indians are also incensed by some recent demolitions of Hindu temples. Poor education further cripples their chances of upward social mobility, forcing them to continue being labourers, although some are now losing out to cheaper foreign workers.

Significantly, the whole issue of discrimination was sparked off by an ethnic Indian lawyer in Malaysia, Waytha Murthy, suing Britain, the country's former colonial ruler, for $4 trillion. Moorthy wants Britain to pay damages of 1 million pounds ($2.06 million) to each of Malaysia's two million ethnic Indians for rights abuses he traces to colonial-era labour schemes that brought their ancestors to Malaysia as indentured workers.

Moorthy says the compensation was being sought because "we were permanently colonized during British rule, and now, under the government of the ethnic Malays. We have lost touch with our roots and have been suppressed so far," he says, while accusing British officials of failing to honour their responsibility to protect ethnic Indians when they granted independence to Malaysia in 1957.

While nobody gives Moorthy a ghost of a chance to succeed in his case, he has struck a sensitive chord with Malaysian Indians. The Hindraf rally's avowed purpose was not only to voice protest over racial discrimination by the Malay majority but also to raise funds for Moorthy's case.

In the Kuala Lumpur rally that sparked off the debate over the plight of ethnic Indians, hundreds of protestors carried Mahatma Gandhi's posters as symbolism for a non-violent struggle. However, persistent failure of the Malaysian Government to address the issues raised could lead to a section of the disgruntled elements taking to arms in tandem with the LTTE in Sri Lanka.

All in all, it would be foolhardy for the Malaysian Government to ignore the genuine grievances of the ethnic Indians. It is not for the Indian Government to intervene in any way because it is an internal matter of the Malaysians and any Indian activism on the issue would only queer the pitch for these hapless people.

However, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi was well within his right to write to the Prime Minister to take up the cause of the ethnic Indians. That is an internal Indian issue because it was not addressed to the Malaysian Government. For a Malaysian minister to tell him to `lay off' was highhanded and uncalled-for.

Mr Kanwar presumes that every place in the world is a lawless free-for-all like India in supporting the lunacy of M Karunanidhi! Hooliganism and damaging public property is a serious offence there unlike in India, where politicians rule the roost. MK clearly put his foot in his mouth without realizing that HINDRAF is a gang of criminal (really!) lawyers trying to hoodwink gullible Tamil-speaking Malaysians. In fact, he later realized that and watered down his uncalled for statement, that was clearly a meddling in another country’s affairs.
HINDRAF has been an nonentity so far and its only work had been to delay demolition of encroachments after collecting a small fee from squatters. The tactic, like in India, is to create a temple and make it an ethnic/communal issue. It has attempted to gain credibility by misrepresenting the economic plight of ‘people of Indian origin’ due to discrimination in favour of sons of the soil. It is of note that Malaysia accounts for the second highest numbers of such people, after US. About 80 per cent of them, HINDRAF clientele, are Tamil-speaking descendents of unskilled emigrants brought in to terrify locals with brawn. Understandably, their economic condition cannot be compared with the status of Indian Diaspora in US, which filters in only people with highest skills and capabilities.
The 20 per cent ethnic Indians outside the HINDRAF influence – skilled Malayalis from Kerala, Sikhs brought in as policemen, Sindhis who came as businessmen and Sri Lankan Tamils brought in as clerks – have all done much better. In fact, most foreign-qualified Malaysian doctors happen to be from this segment.
India’s “honourable” MPs must note that the unruly mob in KL was only tear-gassed and canon-watered; not fired upon or lathi-charged as done in India! It is only by NOT tolerating blackmail of common people going about their routine business that Malaysia has hurtled past India in development. Manmohan Singh and Pranabda must show the concern they say their government has “whenever Indians or people of Indian origins are affected” to people at home! Let them first look back at the plight of Sikhs and Bengalis and Gujaratis hounded in their own country! The best favour they could do Tamil-speaking Malaysians would be not to encourage troublemakers there, who attempt to spread a barbaric brand of Hindutva with clandestine help from Indian entities!
As for the Saffron politicians, do they should realise HINDRAF is a gang up lawyers of nuisance value. They are petitioning a crownless queen of UK to shell out compensation for the sin of her 5th generation ancestors who sent Indian labourers to work for white settlers in Malaya to keep locals at bay! The question is of inviting intervention from UK under pain of terrorist actions if the demands of the ethnic minority are not met. Will BJP countenance a similar petition to Vatican by orthodox Christians of Goa?

Nice article by Mr Kamlendra Kanwar. The comment by Mr Karunanidhi was over the treatment of protestors by the police. The entire drama was well broadcast in all Indian channels and i think any indian minister has the right to raise their concern with this regard. I would also like to pint out that Malaysia has on several occasions raised its hand on global issues relating to Muslims elsewhere in the world. When Malaysians have the right to call for solidarity within the Muslim world, why not Tamils and Hindus?. So the Malaysian minister has no standing in complaining about an Indian Chief ministers comment.

But i do understand that the Malaysia is a progressive developing nation and firmly believe that the government will be able resolve the issue to the satisfaction of the Malaysian Indians. However they have undoubtedly failed on two counts so far 1) Dealing ’s with the silent protestors, 2) Reacting to Mr Karunanidhis concerns.

Ahmedabadsami’s comments are typical of vicious Hindu hater and are full of crock.

Marginalization and discrimination of poor Indians, who originally were brought Tamil Nadu to work in rubber estates in Malaysia is for real. Poverty, health, education, employment — there has been systematic discrimination which has left them in dire straits. Racism is institutionalized in Malaysia. And the poor Indians have to face the brunt of it.

The temple demolition photos and articles are all over the net, written by major news agencies. Either they are dreaming or Ahmedabadsamy is dream.

There is a NRI ministry in India. As is a Pravasi Divas. All countries are concerned about their people abroad — be it the Chinese. English etc. So there is nothing wrong for the Indian PM to raise this issue. Islamic countries, including Malaysia regularly the Kashmir issue in public forums.

HINDRAF should nnot even be there in the first place. It is the duty of the government to protect its citiziens especially the disadvantaged minorities. In Malaysia the opposite happens. HINDRAF took up the cause of poor, voiceless Indians because nobody came to their help be it the government, NGOs what have you.

I am still figuring out this Hindutva thing. Poor folks’ temples, their own source of faith. are being brazenly demolished and this guy talks of Hindutva.

He says,” The tactic, like in India, is to create a temple,”
No sir … many of the temples are very old, existing prior to the country’s independence. While Muslims lands are made legal, their mosques are build on government funds (indians pay tax to fund it!), but Hindu temples get no such favours. The authorities on the ground do what they like.

This guy comes across as a vitriolic hindu hater, having half baked knowledge about the Malaysian situation.
