Naghma's ambitions
Why was actress Naghma so prominent at AICC meet in Delhi? Is she a member of AICC (All India Congress Committee)? From which state? These are some of the questions that are doing the rounds without a proper answer. Whispers are two powerful AICC general secretaries were responsible for extending invite to Bhojpuri actress. Normally the AICC session is open to a selected gathering consisting of 1300-odd members, special invitees and media.
At the meet, Naghma was trying hard to seek Rahul baba's attention but the young Gandhi seemed more preoccupied sending sms than to strike a conversation. She was also seen gushing at Sonia's sartorial taste.
Naghma has a "history" with the Congress. Having campaigned a bit in 2004 general elections, the actress demanded a Rajya Sabha and then Lok Sabha ticket from Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh. She had offered to act, as "Sonia" in an international film project based on AICC chief's full-length biography. Director Jagmohan Mundhra was less than polite in spurning the suggestion.

PM's "secret" visit
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's zealous commitment to indo-US nuclear deal was explained by his "secret" visit. The good doctor traveled to the residence of his predecessor without routine VVIP movement that entails police guarding the entire route from 7, Race Course Road to 6-A Krishna Menon Marg. It was perhaps for the first time since May 22, 2004 that the Prime Minister of India came out without a "route being laid" out. Reluctantly, the elite Special Protection Group (SPG) gave a go ahead considering that Vajpayee's house too was "secured."
Manmohan had taken this precaution to avoid media glare but soon the word was out. What was worse for the Prime Minister that the purpose of his secret parleys with Vajpayee bore little fruit. The BJP quickly made it clear that it was not "on board" on n-deal.

Fulfilling Kabir's Wish
Poet-cum-social reformer Kabir's wish has been fulfilled. Kabir had envisaged a day when he will be able to pray at Kashi and Kaba (revered black stone) in Mecca. This week, a direct flight from Varanasi took off for haj carrying hundreds of pilgrims. However politicians vied for credit. First it was Varanasi Congress MP Rajesh Mishra who declared that fulfilling Kabir's dream was his modest contribution. BSP's minister Naseemuddin Ansari quickly credited Behenji Mayawati. Naseemuddin, a Muslim face of the BSP said it was a result of Uttar Pradesh chief minister's efforts that a flight to Saudi Arabia became reality.

Dog Count
The central government is counting animal population too. The otherwise welcoming gesture has however put enumerators in a bit of a spot. Particularly aggrieved are those responsible to do the head count of dogs. The column has two categories domestic and stray. The domestic count has been smooth so far but it is the stray dogs that are posing many practical problems.

Arjun Singh's disappearance
Union human resource development minister Arjun Singh seems to have changed a lot. Ask his supporters who traveled all the way from Bhopal to Delhi to greet "Dau sahib" on his birthday. But Arjun was missing from his Akbar Road residence. The loyalists waited in vain for hours. They were told that sahib was away to his daughter Beena's house and would not return before night. The disappointed lot caught "Shaan-e-Bhopal Express" without paying respects to the leader. When someone asked AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh if he had wished his one-time mentor, Diggy Raja snapped back saying how he could get the privilege when Arjun's two sons had failed to get the honour. |
