Different antidotes for a similar malady
Written by
Cho Ramaswamy
The ruling UPA arrangement at the centre is being blackmailed by the left.

In Tamil Nadu, the Pattali Makkal Katchi has the DMK regime over an uncomfortable barrel.

"You have no business to be in power as, already having done nothing for the nation while in power. Worse, you have pledged it to the USA" is the refrain of the communists while referring to Dr Manmohan Singh's government.

Yet, the reds have indicated that they will continue to prop up the UPA equation till further notice.

"Anti-people activity is the order of the day in Tamil Nadu," is Dr Ramadoss's daily verdict of Karunanidhi's 14-month old wonder in myriad ways.

However, the PMK founder too hasn't pulled the plug.

Why is the coalition at the centre and the minority ruled set up in Tamil Nadu continuing to stomach this repeated insult, shame and torture?

The reason is obvious.

These two governments have no business of being in power because they aren't the results of people's mandate. Hence, they will have to suffer this mortification as long as they are in harness.

Neither the Congress nor its adjunct – the UPA managed to get a simple majority in Parliament and therefore have to depend upon the idiosyncrasies of several parties (including the left) which opposed them (and won) during the general elections to survive. A slight change in their mindset will topple the ministry at the national level.

Ipso facto, the left's propping up Dr Manmohan Singh's government is contrary to what it promised to the people during the polls.

In other words, a government sans the masses' verdict, supported by those who continue to oppose it, is in effect, anti-people.

And this stature (!) is its Achilles' heel.

Chief Minister Karunanidhi's story has a slightly different script.

Even if the PMK withdraws its backing, his government can survive. But that would mean other allies' demanding their pound of prime flesh.

"The government hasn't fallen now, but there are all the signs of that happening," will be the buzzwords that will do the rounds in Tamil Nadu.

The DMK too didn't a majority during last year's elections but rainbow alliance of the Democratic Progressive Alliance did so, on the plank of a coalition ministry – something admitted by Karunanidhi himself.

Yet the DMK took upon itself to ignore all claims and formed a single party government and used its allies' support.

In a word, the will of the people was twisted by Karunanidhi and power was snatched from a larger base.

In this background, Jayalalithaa's continued taunt by calling it a minority regime is equal to the inquisition.

To recap, the two regimes have usurped power without the will of the people.

Those who participated in electoral politics were derisively taunted by Periyar as vote-pickers. If he had been alive, he perhaps would made fun of the parties in power – at the centre and in Tamil Nadu as those who beg for support.

I cannot say the same thing.

But the two governments are trespassers into the hallowed precincts of power.

This can also be called the surest signs of an incurable malady of the two regimes. Dr Ramadoss will criticize the DMK government repeatedly just the left will threaten the centre.

These sicknesses have an antidote – elections at a national level and a coalition ministry at the state level. Till its administration, the suffering will continue.
